Don’t you remember Christmas as a child? It was somehow slower then it is today. You would get a break from school and grandparents and family were coming to visit. Mom was busy baking and the aroma of cookies and cakes filled the air. Time spent with family was precious and unrushed. Maybe it was because I was a kid that this time of year seemed restful yet full of excitement and wonder. Now that I am the mom I’m trying really hard to keep focused and enjoy the season but I feel this pull by the world to buy more, rush more, and just do more. Don’t you feel it? I don’t want my kids to just remember opening material gifts under the tree, because really think back other than maybe that really cool bike or guitar you begged for, you don’t really remember every gift you got or even still use it today. It’s so fleeting! Yes we give gifts, but I don’t want that to be my focus. What we really take with us is those memories of time spent together in our homes.
So how can I not be pulled into this temptation to hurry and buy, buy, buy and give them all these things that don’t really matter? Well I think it is so important to, first off, remember why we are celebrating this time of year anyway. What gift do I really want my kids to receive this year? Jesus. He is the reason and the gift. The greatest gift man has ever received and He is eternal. This great gift of love from God, who made himself small and wrapped himself in flesh for us. This gift whom saved all whom would receive Him from their sins. He didn’t have to do it, but he did. Because He came we can have great hope. So slow down, we don’t want to miss Him, because there is nothing to celebrate without Him. He is the creator and the reason we have anything at all. The gift of family and friends and everything we have was given by Him, and so it is fitting to celebrate and make memories our children will remember with hopes and prayers that we give them Jesus this Christmas. I think part of the soul stirring warmth of living in one of our homes is that you are brought back to a simpler time where we aren’t pulled into the rush and urgency for more things, but more memories, more family , more rest, and to be more aglow with the beauty of nature.
