The options:

The most common species used in the log home industry is Pine, Cypress and Cedar. Of those, Pine is the majority of what is used. The Original Log Cabin Homes uses Eastern White Pine as a standard. It is beautiful and durable, plus it performs well in all parts of the United States. It is the most economical simply because it is the most readily available. It is the least resinous of all pines and is very dimensionally stable if it is cured/dried correctly.

Cypress and Cedar can be considered more of a “Premium” wood. Both have natural qualities, not possessed by pine, that gives both of these species a special edge compared to other species. Both have a natural resistance to decay and insects, but don’t let that be the deciding factor. These species are at a slightly different price range than pine.
